The Regional Museum in Prešov is in its present form a museum with three organisational units in Prešov – Rákóczi Palace and its adjacent burghers´ houses (Hlavná 86-90), in Hanušovce nad Topľou – The Manor House and Archeopark and the Manor House in Stropkov.
Regional Museum in Prešov was established in the autumn of 1945 and its main building is the Rákóczi Palace. Its history is closely connected with the history of the town. Initially, there were two Gothic burgher houses on the site of the present-day palace, which were bought at the end of the 16th century and rebuilt into a splendid Renaissance town palace by Sigismund Rákóczi – Prince of Transylvania. At present, there are located mainly historical displays, which give visitors an impression of the splendid palace and a comprehensive view of the historical development of the town and the region. Interesting is the ethnographic display presenting the traditional folk culture, or the display of non-living nature. The specialisation of the museum is the history of firefighting and fire equipment, which is the most extensive in Slovakia.
